Over the years I have heard people complain that image composition is slow. Yesterday I completed a composition overhaul which has been planned for four years now. The result is in CVS head and the latest (1.3.020080602) development snapshot. The new implementation is based on a pixel iterator interface framework that I invented in 2004. Using this interface allows each composition operator to be as fast as it can be. It is difficult to imagine how the channel copy operators (Copy, CopyRed, CopyGreen, CopyBlue, CopyOpacity, CopyCyan, CopyMagenta, CopyYellow, CopyBlack) could be any faster without resorting to assembly code. Floating point intensive composition operators are observed to be faster since the compiler is able to optimize them better. Please let me know about any bugs you may find.
