This is because your Perl install was stripped of libperl.a to save 
space.  You can either use --enable-shared or else --without-perl.  It 
is useful to have PerlMagick for its test suite but not necessary.

In the past hour I gained access to a dual-core (AMD64) Linux system 
over the net.  I observed a 174% speedup for the threshold test, and a 
203% speedup for the divide and multiply by two test.  This is 
exceedingly good news since things can get only better from where the 
code is today.  I was growing worried after seeing less stellar 
results from FreeBSD and OS-X.

It is useful to see how well the threading works on other hardware. 
The Intel Core 2 Duo seems quite popular and testing on an eight core 
system would be facinating.
