Installing 1.3.5 on Ubuntu

Hi,
I have compiled 1.3.5 with ./configure --enable-shared;make;make install
When I try and run gm -version I get this error:

gm: error while loading shared libraries: libGraphicsMagick.so.3: cannot
open shared object file: No such file or directory

I found this file exists in magick/.libs but I am guessing it should be
installed somewhere else. Any idea why the install isn't doing this?
