It was actually related to the large penwidth value and occurred with neato as well. It has now been 
fixed. The patched packages will appear tomorrow.

By the way, for aesthetic reasons, have you considered setting tailclip=false when using tapered 
edges? That will hide the blunt end of the taper under the node.
