Ah, the "real" graph being visualized already has such a root element
which I skipped from dot-generation to reduce the number of edges.  The
original root is connected to every other node, but when just connecting
it to the Family nodes as you suggest, that gives really nice results.

I'm using the neato variant with overlap=false now.

I wish there would be less overlap, but for now I can live with that.
