So it sounds like the gdk pixbuf code is no longer a separate plugin and
has been merged with the main gdk plugin. Am I correct?

Indeed, somehow an old libgvplugin_gdk_pixbuf.so.* is hanging around
from an old install, so my bad.

Perhaps the configure message is slightly misleading? What do you think?
