You recommendations have very nearly given me the
family trees of my dreams.

The only remaining issue may be fundemental.

Some of my nodes are quite large, since they consist of 3 lines
of text (name, birth, death) and possible a portrait raster
of the induividual.

It appears (possibly for reasons of coding complexity) that dot's
version of "nodesep" applies to the bottom of the higher
node to the bottom of the lower node (assuming my rankdir of TB).

This leads to the vertical size of the diagram being bigger than I would prefer.

Is dot capable of having 2 such nodes partially side-by-side?

It is fairly obvious in the section "lower.jpg" that the nodes
*could* fit in much less vertical space.
