right, there is about 70% of common code. this number strongly depends 
on encoder/decoder effeciency. so more efficient encoder and/or decoder 
so less this number is. (in my case about 35%; encoder is able to do CIF 
in realtime on P3-700 MHz)

if you would learn then good case is to integrate into reference code 
some fast motion estimation algorithm. you'll:

1)learn almost evrything about h.264
2)have significally faster encoder
