hdot264 is not meant to be a hacked and optimized
version of the reference software, the plan is to
create and optimize a new decoder from scratch, using
ANSI C. Unfortunately all the people that could do
this (myself included) are too busy with their day
jobs to get very far yet. We've had some
contributions though and just need a framework to
start dropping the pieces into.

Xvid has DivX to thank for its existence. Their
Project Mayo code gave xvid an initial codebase (much
better than MoMuSys or JVT code) that people could
just build and use on the day it was first released.
Right now, we're still at the bottom of our hill.

I'm sure though that this can be a success. H.264 +
Open Source is the natural next step after MPEG-4. So
if anyone wants to join in, get setup on sourceforge
and CVS and we'll add you to the project.
