Until you get it to work, continue to run it with sudo. Later, you can
look into changing the default permission to let your normal user run
it.

If CarlK's test reveals no drivers are loaded, load them:

$ sudo modprobe -a ohci1394 raw1394

At this point $ dmesg | grep 1394 would show some information about
the number of FireWire nodes detected. One of the nodes is your card,
so you need >1. You can get the node count as follows:

$ cat /sys/class/ieee1394_host/fw-host0/device/node_count

If you have 1, but not more, try a different cable or verify the
camera and cable works on a friend or shop's computer. If the camera
and cable are known good, but Linux kernel still reports only 1 node,
then you might have a problem with the way the firewire card is
accepted by the motherboard, bios, or kernel, and then things get
difficult.
