OK.  Then they are different link layer controllers and different PHYs 
too.  (PCI4451 come with an extra PHY, VT6306 have their own.)

Do you remember which Mandriva version it was?

The drivers themselves didn't change much during the last few years.
Also, while PCI4451 and VT6306 are old, VT6306 are still very often 
found in newly produced 3-port PCI and CardBus cards and they are 
generally in wide use.  So we should notice regressions like that.
Maybe we don't get feedback because Linux users give up to soon if 
hardware doesn't work right?

The most likely change in newer Linuxes is that interrupt handling 
latency of newer kernels is (should be) lower... which normally is a 
plus but perhaps uncovers old problems with bus reset handling.  (I am 
just wildly speculating.)

Still, another remaining possibility is that some event damaged both 
camcorders.  If you know somebody with Windows notebook/ PC with 
FireWire or a Mac --- or can find an old Mandriva life CD --- would be 
good if you can check if those systems still discover the camcorders.
