Over the weekend, I went to the FOSDEM conference in Belgium http://www.fosdem.org Notable talks for me were Robert Love, on kernel and desktop integration. You'll all know about this, but effort going into making Linux better at integrating devices, e.g. when a digital camera is plugged in Gphoto will start up and pop a message up to the user. An excellent lightning talk on LVM2 by Alistair Kergon - the sort of stuff you need if you look after many Tbytes of data. Most interesting to this group was Keith Packards talk on Xfree86. His concept for the future is that 3D acceleration is highly optimised. OpenGL will be the lowest graphics layer, with 2D X sending data to that. (Sorry of my nomenclature is wrong, I hope the concept is clear). This makes it easy to do e.g. 3D collaborative environments. I think it willl also make it easy to do video effects on your normal desktop machine. Yes, I know this is possible now, but it'll just be built in.
