This sounds pretty cool but animation and compositing is going to be  
pretty painful with the current opensource software unless you keep the  
characters and project as a whole really simple.  Please don't make the  
mistake everyone else does when starting a dead end short and try to do  
the most complex thing that will blow everyone away.  Just try to make  
everyone laugh.  You can do that with the simplest of objects.  Just  
look at southpark, team america, don hertzfeldt shorts(bobby's balloon,  
rejected, etc... www.bitterfilms.com) or Major Damage  
(www.majordamage.org).

I know you guys are probably trying to show the power of Aqsis but you  
will be rewarded much more by skipping the cool but boring scifi short  
(ie rockfish) and going with the smart, funny, simple short.
