I haven't looked since they originally announced it, but at that time,
the biggest problem I saw with GridEngine for film use was that it had
no concept of frames. If I've got a 700 frame render job, I want to
submit one script that gets executed 700 times just varying the frame
number. I want to treat it as a single job when I look at it or modify
it.

You can implement it as 700 individual jobs (which grid probably handles
just fine), but then you've got to deal with the issues of managing them
as a group yourself. Has that changed?

Take a look at Rush:

This is the commercial version of a render queue that's been used at a
number of production facilities and has features for running big render
queues with multiple projects sharing machines. Digital Domain had a
customized version called race and Greg worked for me. It's a great
product for this market.
