Presentation covers a basic overview of rendering theory, through a
discussion of mental ray's capabilities, ending with an example of how you
can extend mental ray by writing shaders.

mental ray is rendering software that processes 3D models created in
packages such as SoftImage or Maya and outputs photorealistic 2D images for
movies. It combines physically correct simulation of the behavior of light
with full programmability to create images of outstanding quality and
unsurpassed realism. It uses GPU acceleration and recursive sampling
techniques for faster rendering on single processor machines and provides
scalable performance across networks of machines.
