Gridengine (SGE) installation

Finally got around to trying the Sun Grid Engine, as Andrew Wang had
recommended on this list. Installation went smoothly, but having some
trouble operating it. There are no docs for how to run SGE as a render
queue. Using google I found an array job example called hellotask. When that
didn't do anything I tried the included sample.sh test script which is a
single job. Can't see that it does anything either.
Jobs launch ok with qsub, but I can't tell that they actually run. My
trivial test scripts should run in an instant, but seem to stay pending
forever.
Anyone know what the qstat output below is trying to tell me?
