I just did a little research on the videolan.org site, and it uses
ffmpeg for many things, probably including advertised support for DV--at
least for vlc. Also, the vls has a "file" input module. The dv1394
driver has a wonderful feature that lets you capture raw DV simply by
reading its /dev/... file. This is not necessarily robust and can lead
to buffer overruns in the driver corrupting images when the application
does not process frames fast enough. In that case, you can use the
dvgrab utility for extra buffering (and camera vtr control). One way or
another you can pipe the rawdv out of dvgrab and into vls "file" input
module. For experimentation, I recommend you capture a rawdv file using
dvgrab and/or dv1394 and try to first get vlc to play it and then vls to
convert and broadcast it. My compiled version of vlc is not playing DV,
and I am not really in the mood to figure out why and make it work. But
all this sounds like a lot more work than just using ffmpeg ;-)
