Responsibilities: _ Designs/implements management tools for complex local and wide-area networks of machines. _ Designs/implements and automates administration of network services. _ Works under general direction from senior management. _ Recommends policies on system use, services, and procedures. _ Provides technical leadership to system administrators, system programmers, or others of equivalent seniority. Required Skills: _ Strong interpersonal and communications skills; capable of writing proposals or papers, acting as a vendor liaison, making presentations to client audiences or professional peers, and working closely with upper management. _ Ability to solve problems quickly and automate processes. _ A solid understanding of an operating system; understands paging and swapping, inter-process communications, devices and what device drivers do, file system concepts (inode, clustering, logical partitions), can use performance analysis to tune systems. _ A solid understanding of networking/distributed computing environment concepts; understands principles of routing, client/server programming, and the design of consistent network-wide filesystem layouts. _ Extensive programming experience in Perl, shell, and C. _ Ability to find and correct defects in existing C code repositories affecting system performance. _ Ability to create new operating-system-level services and/or modifying existing services. _ Experience programming in an Oracle and PL/SQL environment. _ Experience designing, building, configuring, and managing NFS and autofs environments. _ Experience designing, building, configuring, and managing an LDAP infrastructure. _ Experience with TCP/IP networking protocols. Ability to debug (tcpdump, etherpeek, netstat, lsof ) and program at the network level. _ Experience installing/configuring and automating maintenance of DNS/BIND. _ Experience with network security (e.g., configuring firewalls, deploying authentication systems, or applying cryptography to network applications). _ Experience with host security (e.g., passwords, uids/gids, SIDs, file permissions, ACLs, filesystem integrity, use of security packages). _ Experience with Kerberos. _ Experience installing/configuring server hardware, peripherals, and storage systems. _ Experience coordinating multiple independent computer facilities (e.g., working for the central group at a large company). _ Experience at sites with over 1,000 computers, over 1,000 users, and over a 100 terabytes of disk space. _ Ability to apply statistical analysis techniques for performance analysis or debugging purposes for 1000+ concurrently operating systems. Required Background: _ More than ten years of previous UNIX and/or Linux system administration experience. _ More than five years of UNIX and/or Linux programming experience. _ Last-tier service support experience in an on-call pager rotation. Desirable Background and Skills: _ A degree in computer science or a related field. _ Extensive programming background in any applicable language. _ Publications within the field of system administration. _ Experience as postmaster of a site. _ Experience programming in a TCP/IP multicast networking environment. _ Experience implementing and developing to a single-sign on authentication environment. _ Experience with X and OpenGL software development. _ Experience as a database administrator. _ Experience installing/configuring load balancers, packet shapers, or proxies. _ Experience with administration of charge-back accounting for service consumption. _ Experience with Network Appliance file servers and/or development with NetApp API's and protocols.
