I am using Ubuntu on my home desktop, work laptop, and work compute server. Perhaps of more interest to this group is that I'm using Ubuntu as the basis for a pair of realtime linux machines that stream HD in and out. The machines use a non Ubuntu kernel. The kernel is stock 2.6.12 + bigphysarea patch. The patch is required for the HD video card we are using. We haven't had any trouble with latency from the kernel. Of course those machine don't run any off the shelf binary only applications, so perhaps it isn't so interesting after all, other than to say that it works more or less out of box. On other workstations around here at work, we've had no trouble running the off the shelf binaries we've tried, which is limited to some management stuff and VMWare for testing. -- Joshua D.
