It's being done at Animal Logic in Sydney and is due for release in November this year. We do use a mixture of off-the-shelf packages and proprietary software (e.g. MayaMan) and we do have systems running Linux and open-source software, particularly "pipeline"-type systems that we use to manage the project. Sorry for being so vague but it's often standard procedure on these types of projects not to comment on specifics until after they're released. I can definitely confirm a render farm is being used! ;) (We probably still have an entry in top500.org).
