Film based compositing is not a very large field, which is why most of the developers are really tiny companies. Other competition for Shake include Digital Fusion, Combustion, After Effectts, Toxic, Flint/Flame/Inferno and as you mentioned Nuke. The shake code base has some issues with big things like caching and quicktime support. The new rewrite will probably be similar to motion a depend on the video card for hardware rendering unlike shake which is 100% software. Also the gui could be a little more fluid and artist friendly like Flint/Flame/Inferno. -deke Using Tomcat but need to do more? Need to support web services, security?
