You can find a poscast interview with Dion Scoppettuolo, Senior Product

It sounds to me like Apple is building their new application for the Final
Cut Pro crowd and abandoning the small highend FX compositing professionals
for a larger prosumer market.

The letter they sent to us read that there weren't going to be anymore
bug fixes.  Apple is encouraging people to cash out on their
maintenance with a prorated money back and also an offer to buy the
source code(50k).  They will not be offering anymore support contracts
so pretty much support ends for most people at the latest 9-12 months
from now.
