Christian, go and read the specifications on http://www.rtsp.org/ before you regard protocols as weaker. Also implementing a new protocol into icecast depends heavily on the internal structure of the server. If it doesn't have built in support for pluggable protocols changing the program isn't that easy, especially when you want to tune it for high performance.
