We have also seen this in GTK+3. In my opinion GTK is also being too ambitious and their excitement in doing fancy (and unnecessary) stuff goes beyond limits. The problem there is that they give priority to bringing a lot of new stuff rather than to software stability. Paradoxically, GTK+2 became more stable because they stopped developing it. The GTK+3 API is full of deprecated stuff, and the jump from version 3.14 to 3.24 came with massive changes regarding OpenGL.
