So far, my theories are [1] more issues with rate-control in mpeg2enc or [2] my latest version of y4mdenoise is doing really well (bordering on magic) with DV camcorder footage of amateur sports footage (which should be a nightmare case for both denoising and MPEG encoding). I'm leaning towards #1.
