I am one of these "old" developers that are nowadays not able to 
contribute to the project anymore (I don't do any leisure time at all 
anymore, at least not at the moment).

I wonder sometimes where these downloads are coming from - oculd it be 
Gentoo packages that download the sourcecode and compile it on user 
machines?
