I would recommend proceeding with that.

I will look into getting something done about this on the Debian side,
but with one distractive factor and another, I can make zero guarantees
about time-frames - even assuming there's no pushback from the Debian
people about any of it.

Having this working in the meantime is probably worth the slight added
churn.
