layering

whenever i play a video file under mplayer, the movie
image is layered ontop of everything else, including
other windows. I think ive figured it out on how to
get it so that it layers properly, when not in focus.
Basically, i think i need to get the X11 libraries.
What libraries do i need? i have an xserver running,
but im unsure on what specific libraries i need.
