I can't say if it works in that old version, but in newer versions to
disable the _default_ value of a keyboard input, you have to assign a
new action to the key. Instead of commenting out "q quit" try changing it
to "q noop". When I do that, I get error messages for hitting "q", but
playback continues:

VO: [vdpau] 720x306 => 720x306 Planar YV12 
V:   1.6   0/  0  3%  8%  0.0% 0 0 
Invalid command for bound key q : noop             
V:   3.9   0/  0  2%  7%  0.0% 0 0
