I've tried this (cvscompile) but I still get "sound card busy". I then was
able to access the sound card to play a CD.

I have a NEC laptop with a via82 chipset and have installed alsa 0.9.6 and
finally have the sound card working. Distro Mandrake 9.1.
graphics card is an ATI Mobile Radeon
So, I hopefully installed ogle. Tried new rpms, didn't go, thought I'd use
 the source
a52dec-0.7.4.tar.gz mad-0.14.2b.tar.gz xvattr-1.3.tar.gz
jpegsrc.v6b.tar.gz ogle-0.9.1.tar.gz
libdvdread-0.9.4.tar.gz ogle_gui-0.9.1.tar.gz

 and compiled OK.
starts up, GUI, but can't access the sound

Great, glad you posted an update, this might perhaps help others that
are having problems with S/PDIF.
