I found a small mistake I made in my oglerc with this problem. (I have
left the original post below in case someone might wish to refer to it.)
My oglerc reads thus:

 <audio>
  <device>
   <driver>oss</driver>
   <path>/dev/dsp</path>
  </device>
  <speakers>
   <channel_config>
     <chtype>Left</chtype>
     <chtype>Right</chtype>
   </channel_config>
  </speakers>

Ogle proceeds with video and does not crash (as it did before). But, I
have no sound. When I open gnome-alsamixter and run the PCM and Master
slides up and down, I get clicks and pops in my speakers. Is there
something I need to add in my oglerc to get this to go?
