I was slow to respond because repeatedly failed to make any sense of 
those questions in this context.

Myself, I think you're saying an old 2.4 Linux doesn't obviously 
discover that you have a USB DVD plugged into it.  I'd therefore guess 
next you'd want to try such explorations as:

dmesg | tail
less /proc/bus/usb/devices

but in passing I notice that:
