Answering a bit late, but it could be that you need to turn on
XV_AUTOPAINT_COLORKEY (you can check with xvinfo or xvattr if it is set (1)
or not (0))
This problem is fixed in cvs.
Or if you are running multihead (multiple monitors), Xv may only work on one 
of them.
