Build&debug VLC sources

Hi All,
 
I want to understand VLC decoder in order to strengthen my knowledge about video codecs.
Can anyone help me to clarify how can I build and debug VLC sources under linux shell.
I tried to install VLC-1.1.1.tar but i found many errors when launching ./configure.
 
Could you please share a develloping guide to help for that
 
Any help will be greately appreciated.
