You can also use "make distcheck", it creates distribution package and
checks if it can be compiled out-of-tree.

Probably not, autogen.sh is used to generate makefiles.

I usually use fresh git/hg checkouts when I create distibution
packages. Then I can be sure everything was generated from the correct
revision, and there's nothing extra in.

Tags are used to mark specific hg revision with a symbolic name (ex. to
record from what commit release was made). But, yes, usually both steps
are required when making a release.

I'll ask Diego Pettenò if he still has admin privileges to some of the
systems. It would be nice to add a news entry to the web page and
upload the tarball.

2.6 is library ABI version (as in libxine.so.2.6.0). I think 1.2.6 used
"2.5" as plugin dir.

I think the problem is with the GUI. xine-ui is quite old and difficult
to use. There won't be much users unless someone writes a new GUI ...

Xine-lib itself is still very much usable. I use it daily in couple of
embedded-like systems. And sometimes with xine-ui from command-line to
play different kind of media files, discs etc. - mostly when I don't
want to open any GUI or when vlc refuses to play something properly.

Maybe distros have some kind of download stats. sourceforge.net
download page says ~ 400 downloads / week (for source tarball ?).
