1.1.7 works on this SuSE 10.3A7 and on my Alpha6 Laptop.
Matter of fact it plays about all audio program including "amarok"
This White Box is a AMD Nvidia system and Xine works great.

If he is a user permissions may be his problem.  I sugesst trying it as 
root.
