Do you have any reception problems? Less-than-good cabling? (Check the BER
with dvbtune on various channels - use those which are broadcast using higher
QAM values, since they should show problems more readily - well, they do
here...)

Actually, an image of the menu only would have done... still, too late now
:-)

Truncation at the first non-ASCII character... looks like a locale mismatch -
this sort of thing can happen when something which uses UTF-8 encounters
something which isn't valid UTF-8. I can duplicate it here by installing the
de_DE locale then running "LANG=de_DE xine" (the desktop environment uses
en_GB.UTF-8).

  $ LANG=de_DE.UTF-8 xine
should work; if it does, you should consider changing your default locale
accordingly.
