xine audio going to wrong sound card

Hi all,
A couple of weeks ago I wrote in about a couple of machines where
xine was not producing audio. In one case this was solved by
rebuilding xine-lib with some extra flags but on the second machine
that didn't work and the machine has continued to not produce audio,
or so I thought. It turns out that xine is sending audio to the second
card. When I turn on my home theater system and switch to that input I
find I'm getting sound that should be going through the PC's main
sound device.

On both machines I have multiple sound cards. On the machine that
didn't appear to be working the onboard sound chip is the default
device and an external USB to TOS converter is the second:

dragonfly ~ # cat /proc/asound/cards

 1 [default ]: USB-Audio - USB Audio CODEC

xine is routing audio through that device instead of the Intel
sound chip. All other sound applications - Aqualung, mplayer, flash in
Firefox, etc., send sound to the Intel chip. Only xine is having this
problem.

If it matters, xine is having this problem for all audio, not just
DVDs that I originally found it on. xine playing CDs operates the same
way.

I don't exactly know where to look to get information on this
problem. If anyone can point me in a direction to start solving this
I'd really appreciate it.

dragonfly ~ # emerge -pv xine-ui xine-lib

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:
