xine briefly opening then closing unexpectedly

We have gxine 05.9. It has worked quite well, but then at some point,
when I opened audio or video files, it would open, then a few seconds
later close unexpectedly. Now I notice that even if I go to the
applications menu and click on gxine, it does the same thing. It will
open briefly, then shut down without a "crash" message to explain the
problem.

Any suggestions? Thanks!
