Darren, thank you for your reply.  I still haven't pursued the fixes I 
need to get gxine compiled to test, but I'll report on xine-ui from hg

Even with configuration experienced set to Master of the Known Universe, 
the only De-interlace option exposed in xine Ui configuration is marked 
as deprecated, and has no other option but to choose from a list of a 
few filters.  I can't find anywhere to configure the 'new' tvtime plugin.

I'm able to make Xine work well simply because back when Kaffeine was a 
full fucntion/feature program, it had some great presets and I copied 
the following from it's config file (which works when used in .xine config)

gui.deinterlace_plugin:tvtime:method=Greedy2Frame,enabled=1,pulldown=vektor,pulldown_error_wait=0,framerate_mode=full,judder_correction=1,use_progressive_frame_flag=1,chroma_filter=0,cheap_mode=0

there is simply no way I could ever re-create this on a new system with 
only xine-ui.

Also, Xine-ui will still completely lock up X when you try to scroll the 
drop down lists with several options on the configu GUI.  This is a 
problem that I have noticed on all versions of ubuntu (Gutsy, Hardy, 
Jaunty and now Karmic) on both ATI and Nvidia video with proprietary and 
open source drivers.. it just breaks.  This is obviously an x bug, but 
so far, Xine-ui config editor is the only program I know of that can 
reproduce it 100%
