Licensing question

Hello I have asked this question at gnu.org but received no response I wish to create a media player type of application. according to the GPL if my app loads xvid or similar then it must be open source. Is that correct? if thats the case then why isnt media player open source and what are you doing to force MS to go open source ;) Seriously though, the GPL seems to preclude any one from using your CODEC and other similar codecs. as all codecs must be loaded dynamically to be used. It appears even the OS cannot load the codec without breaching GPL. I have read the GPL FAQ and GPL'd software can load OS components without breaching the license but the reverse does not appear to be true. What is the current wisdom on this? Chris
