** Users Don=E2=80=99t Read, Part 715
In which Dr. Nielsen is the victim of his own research findings...
In my last newsletter I posted a link to a survey we are conducting about
intranet mobile design (https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/nngmobileent) .
Thank you for the responses so far.
We noticed a large drop-off rate at the 3rd survey question. Why?
Because that=E2=80=99s the first question that makes it clear that the sur=
vey is about
sites/apps that are for use inside companies by employees only.
In other words, many people had clicked through to the survey and started
filling it out without realizing that it was focused on this very targeted=
domain.
Of course, we said so =E2=80=9Cclearly=E2=80=9D (or so we thought): both i=
n my last
newsletter and in a short preamble on the survey form itself.
Once more it has been proven that many users don=E2=80=99t read such intro=
ductory
blah-blah text (http://www.nngroup.com/articles/blah-blah-text-keep-cut-or=
-kill/)
but skip straight to the place where they can click, type, or otherwise do=
something.
I knew this, but still designed the clickable link wrong in my last newsle=
tter. Sorry.

** "Head-tracking" Mobile Phone
The new Samsung Galaxy S 4 includes a "head-tracking" feature that will pa=
use
videos when users turn away from the phone. It's also possible to use tilt=
gestures
for scrolling as long as the camera senses that the user is looking at the=
phone.
(So it won't scroll if you move the phone while looking away.)
This seems like a promising intermediate stage technology while we wait fo=
r
eyetracking to move beyond the expensive specialized equipment we use in t=
he lab.
(Of course, we haven't tested this newly-announced phone yet, so I don't k=
now for
sure whether these features have good usability or are confusing, which co=
uld
easily be the case with a poor design. But I am hopeful, because I have me=
t
several good UX people from Samsung at recent Usability Week events.)

** Microsoft Listens
Neat new feature in Internet Explorer 10: view password in cleartext
while clicking a small icon in a field with otherwise-masked characters.
Looks like this:

This is not quite what I wanted when I asked websites to stop password mas=
king
(http://www.nngroup.com/articles/stop-password-masking/) .
But this is a good example of how browser vendors can help users overcome
usability problems in web design. It's already helped me in the few days I=
've had
IE10 on my machine. Nice work MS.
