Template issue - Items not displaying in page

I made a few minor changes to my layout like adding subscription link and 
adding a description.  Somewhere in the process I seemed to have corrupted 
the entire template because no matter what I do I can't get the entire page 
to load.  

Now when the page renders the page has no description or page title instead 
it is replaced with a bunch of blank lines.  

I've tried switching to classic which seems to restore everything but when 
I switch back everything is still lost.  When I switch to dynamic I can get 
the title but no description and the gadgets are now missing.

I didn't make a backup of the template prior to making changes because I 
was just making minor changes and thought nothing of it.
