I'm still working on a solution (I have limited time I can devote to it). It's based around storing the next page tokens in an array as discussed here, with an index (counter) being incremented and decremented when a prev or next button is pressed. I think that when a request is sent that would have to be recorded so that on receipt of the data, it is known if the index should incremented or decremented. I haven't implemented it yet. It would be a lot better if the API actually worked correctly! It's about a year and a half since I first reported this.
