Soho background image resize height

I'm currently using soho theme. I'd like to use a background image but the 
size on the screen is too large. I'd like to make it a wide banner image 
(1600*500), but the current displayed size takes up the full page. Or can 
the image appear behind the header? Any CSS workaround?
