What are considered the key features of Webtest over other popular testin=
g=20
frameworks? I remember choosing Webtest because of the Ant based engine =
and=20
the nice reporting. I was able to script the scripts for my first set of=
=20
tests. Ant allowed easy integration into my CI environment (currently us=
ing=20
Hudson). And the reports were easily published and visible.

Hi Michael,

you are right.

I think, if the feedback is big enough and there are enough people willin=
g=20
to contribute (and I think there already is a trend towards that) we shou=
ld=20
first consolidate and renew the build:

1. either maybe entirely use maven (the main build still is ant, but=
 at=20
least dependencies are fetched using maven, maybe some deployment as well=
)=20
or go on to gradle.
The special things in the build are the selftest and the automatic=20
publishing at webtest.canoo.com ... This probably could easier be address=
ed=20
using gradle =E2=80=93 but more developers are used to maven. But this th=
en can be=20
discussed after doing the move.

2. move the automated build from the old Cruise Control to a modern=20
continuous integration platform (-> we are using Teamcity at Canoo, I thi=
nk=20
either we move the build there =E2=80=93 or alternatively we also could u=
se Jenkins=20
or Hudson if this would show advantages)

Canoo surely still would be willing to sponsor the operation of the build=
=20
server and the webtest.canoo.com site.

You are right regarding webtest and its connectednesswith htmlunit. But I=
=20
think, we can manage this after we have simplified the build. I also have=
=20
done a small contribution to htmlunit once before and it wasn=E2=80=99t t=
hat hard to=20
get into it.

Cheers,

Martin

Hi Martin,

+1,

but I did some research in contributing webtest and each time i stuck wit=
h=20
the challenging struckture of the project the connectedness with htmlunit=
,=20
other dependencies and even the ancient and complex build.

May be with more initial support I would be able to support.

I=E2=80=99m Developer and do nowadays write most of my test in Groovy =E2=
=80=93 my=20
webtests-suite (XML-based) is only maintained.

For me the main drawback ist he =E2=80=9Eout-of-date=E2=80=9C browser-sup=
port (including JS)=20
via htmlunit. Years ago the most webtest supporter were also htmlunit=20
developer.

Hi all,

WebTest is OpenSource as you know. If we would move the source code to=20
GitHub and make it easier for the community to do contributions on their=20
own =E2=80=93 would some of you be able / willing to spend time in contri=
buting?

I also believe it would be very sad to let WebTest die as its core idea a=
nd=20
concept still are very valid and helpful even in actual development=20
projects.

Could you give some feedback about if you could contribute?

Just send a =E2=80=9C+1=E2=80=9D to the list, so we see, if it will be wo=
rth moving the=20
project.

Cheers,

Martin

It=E2=80=99s quite the same for me. I=E2=80=99m still using Webtest. I th=

good tool. So far I could cover all I wanted with it. Ease of use,=20

that is just fine.

So, I don=E2=80=99t like to see it just fade away like that. Still I=E2=80=

about moving over to another tool as there is no activity or progress=20

I happen to like using Webtest and find it truly disappointing that the=20

developers, and the ability to write test scripts using Ant XML is much=20
easier for them to grasp than writing Java code.

I was able to get a version of Webtest running on htmlunit 2.12. But the=

Webtest uses htmlunit 2.10.
What are the chances that webtest will be updated to use htmlunit 2.14
or we should migrate to other tools for automated testing of web=20
