Hi Jan, Interesting problem:-)

This is an ancient problem that predates the web... I once had to do a page
layout for a brochure that was supposed to look like a bunch of photographs
were dropped on a desktop willy-nily.

I struggled with it for ages jumbling, re-shifting and jumbling the images
again until my boss explained that it wouldn't look right until all the
different sized images were in proportion (it's a subconscious thing) and he
was right.

So... in web-page terms you could try the following:

- resize all the images such that at least one side of each is the same (for
ex: 20x20; 20x50; 100x20; 45x20)

- leave them at different sizes but crop the long side of each image so that
the images are all in pro. So for example, multiply all the short sides by
the short-to-long ratio of the 'squarest' image. This may be a silly idea of
course...

- if you can't automatically do any of the above, make sure that there is a
grid in there somewhere. You could for example set a grid and align the
lop-left corners of all the images to the grid
