How to present images in various sizes?

Hello,
I'm currently working on a project that has left me struggling with a real
design problem.
I have to present a lot of images in different sizes (120x600, 250x250,
120x60 etc) on a resultpage.
I have of course suggested to present a miniature picture of these images to
get them in the same size. However that doesn't seem to be an option since
the most important thing to the user is being able to see the whole image at
once to decide whether or not that particular image is of interest.
This will leave the resultlist very cluttered and hard to overview (in my
opinion).
I've been looking for design patterns for this kind of problem but the
common standard to present images seems to be by doing it the Google way
(Google image search)
Does anyone have an idea of how to solve this problem? Are there any
websites out there that has an image gallery with various sizes and that's
still usable?
Thank you for your help!
