Have you considered any sort of semantic paging or scrolling? By semantic paging, I mean breaking the pages into meaningful units. e.g. rolodexes are broken up by A, B, C, D, etc. which can be reduced into categories like Adams - Jenkins, Johns - Quek, etc. Cameras under $100, Cameras between $101 - 300. I believe certain versions of MS Word had, in addition to normal page up/page down, the ability for the page down control to click to next chapter, next illustration, next markup etc. If the list is very large, consider providing search.
