In this discussion two issues rear, one is usability and the other is
training.
This case shows me how are they related.
Some people seem to have included "learnability" in the usability
definition, in addition to efficiency, efficacy and pleasure.
One tests learnability with "fresh" users. Reserve the most obnoxious for
the end. Also, consider thet in the future due to staff rotation somebody
will have to explain the system to newer employees.
Usability in applications with known, trained, users is more related to
navigation than to affordances. Yes, affordances are useful, but the mental
stance of the tester, the questions to answer, are something like "will this
user be able to operate this UI for the next 4 years, 8 hours a day (or
whatever), every day, without hating it?"
Any minor glitch or inconvenience, when repeated ad nauseam during an enough
long time span, could ignite riots and massive complais.
